Cat's Only
How to feed cats, the following is an excerpt from Dr. Lisa Pierson, DVM.
Have you ever seen a barn cat barbecue and dehydrate its mouse dinner and top it off with a dessert of corn gluten meal soufflé? Or heard of a cat that went hunting for rice grains or oatmeal for breakfast? No? It would be illogical to feed an obligate carnivore a steady diet of meat-flavored cereal, right? Then why are we continuing to feed cats like they're herbivores? Hopefully, many of you read the "Timely Topics in Nutrition" article in the December 1st 2002 Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) titled "The Carnivore Connection to Nutrition in Cats". After reading this, I wonder why anyone advocates feeding grain-packed commercially prepared dry food to a cat.
I borrowed the above statement from the website of www.catnutrition.org. This site was the first place I started with my own cat in 2006. This website has wonderful information on how to feed cats. It also has a tried and true recipe that is simple and easy to make for your cat. If you wish to use your own mix for your cat the following products will help in that quest. Cats require only meat, bone and organs in their diet. They do not process grains or vegetables. When figuring the amount of food that your cat will require, please use the how much to feed calculator on our main site. This will give you the daily requirement for your cat. If you choose to make your own daily mix, I suggest that you add 1/2tsp of salmon oil and about 1/4 cup of water to your cat's meat of choice. We also offer sliced hearts and livers for your convenience. Please email me and I will forward to you a chart that you can use when adding organ meats. In addition, if your cat is just switching to raw food we can help. Some cats can be very difficult but a little perseverence pays off in the end and your cat will thank you, we promise!
Please remember that I am here to help. Feel free to email any questions or concerns that you may have and if you need suggestions on how to make the switch, I can help there as well!
